Housing for following generations

Emily of Monsterlady’s Diary posted recently about what she might do if she had a million dollars to give away and it focused on making sure her family and herself could own their own homes. I have thought about this very issue quite a bit as I’ve aged, and pondered it some more this morning sitting on my deck with Finn and my coffee.

I think that one of the things that would bring me comfort as I ‘age out’ of society would be knowing that the generations following mine could have a fair chance to own a home. I think that is a bit of stretch given current conditions. But there are some things I’ll be watching for before my ashes are put in a jar somewhere.

Spirit’s new accommodation and puppy perambulation

Irene had to move her horse, Spirit, to a new stable recently. The new place is actually closer: theoretically, close enough to walk to, or a three minute drive if you dislike that theory as I do. Irene insisted for several days that I had to come see the new boarding situation. I, on the other hand, have been quite happy just to know that Irene is happy with things: why spoil it by having to go somewhere? But she insisted, and yesterday I finally went.

The most important part of the new boarding place, at least in our dog Finn’s opinion, is the fact that Finn has two dog-buddies there to play with. Banjo and Timber are close enough to Finn’s size, age, and temperament that he always has a good time playing with them. So our visit was really more about Finn than about the horses.

Site design refresh ‘completed’

I’ve completed the site theme update as I mentioned yesterday. It isn’t completely finished: some things are still broken (sorry, macOS Safari users), and I’m not happy yet with some elements of the appearance.

But I did accomplish the main objectives I had. Ubergeek Kelly’s World is now using a more ‘modern’ theme that works with the plugins that were causing problems with the Twenty Fourteen theme I was using previously. And as part of the change I implemented the permalinks change (wth redirects from the old structure) I wanted to make. There are some additional details below for the ‘tech-curious’.

It is beginning to feel like fall…

Ah, the signs of fall in the Kootenays. Some of the trees have started to change their colours a bit early. The nights have a distinct chill to them: not quite frosty yet, but there is definitely a sense of that coming. The robins seem to have gotten quieter, and some tiny birds are performing strange flocking dances that don’t appear earlier in the year.

The strongest indicators of fall for me, though, come down to three annual chores that I’ve grown accustomed to.

Gaming content on the move…

For twenty years I had this singular blog: the one you are looking at right now, Ubergeek Kelly’s World. It definitely has served its purpose as a brain-dump blog of all the things that interest me.

But for years I have felt that some topics on the blog just didn’t ‘fit’, and this posed some challenges. I began my plan to address these challenges when I split out my motorcycle related content earlier this year to a new blog: Geek on a Harley. Now I’m beginning the second stage of my changes by moving my gaming related content to a new location: Words of the AgingGamer (https://www.aginggamer.net).

You can like this post!

No one has liked any of my posts or comments in months. Actually, that isn’t really true- the actual truth is that a small number of people who visit my site without using a browser have liked some of my posts. Nope, that still isn’t completely true: people may like my posts, but they can’t push a button recording the idea that they like them.

That’s a long-winded way of saying that the ‘like’ button that is supposed to appear on posts and comments has been broken. So badly broken, in fact, that I turned the feature off. Well, you can now rejoice! The Like button is back (although as always you need to log in…), and boy is that a story…

Back home after a road trip

I returned home yesterday after being away for a week. Home these days is a lovely, peaceful place, and I am very lucky to live here. Now that I am retired, I can sit out on my porch and allow myself all the time I want to ponder life’s oddities.

One of these ponders: if I like my home so much, why did I go away on a motorcycle road trip for a week? Or any trip, for that matter?

Edmonton, I hardly recognize ya…

I’ve arrived on my motorcycle in Edmonton, and have navigated thanks to my GPS from the West end of the city to my hotel in the city’s South East area.

I lived in Edmonton for the first 35 years of my life, but this is the first time that I’ve returned that I could barely recognize … well, anything.
