Printing WordPress blog entries made easier

My Mom must love me- she actually has printed out one or two of my blog entries. But until tonight, printing one of my blog entries wasn’t exactly easy. I’ve taken care of that now…

I’ve added a new plugin to my WordPress blog- WP-Print by Lester Chan. It seems to be working great: you should see a “print this post” link at the bottom of this posting here on the main page, and a little printer icon near the title when viewing an individual posting.  If you click this link the page will be regenerated without the fancy borders and such, ready for printing.
I had to work a bit to get the plugin to work with my site. There were a couple that “broke” the plugin entirely until I corrected them. When I first started up the plugin clicking the link generated a 404 error. That was easy to fix- the readme even told me what to do: re-generate the Permalinks (Options->Permalinks->Update Permalink Structure. Once the 404 error was cleared up, the next problem was that clicking the link generated a blank screen. Looking at my PHP logs revealed this error: (more…)

Arrrgh…WordPress doesn’t allow registered users to edit their own comments?

I am the admin of this site. It makes sense that I can edit anything here…and so I can. I had this theory, though, that a registered user here should be able to edit their own comments. Apparently, I was wrong.

Argh…comment spam, and delayed comment approvals

My apologies to folks who have posted here in the last several days and never say their words of wisdom appear on the site. I’m calling out here to Daren (who commented on my Linksys/Linux connection failure item), James Lynch (who commented on my NSLU2/ Linux Samba post), and my very own sister, Connie, who probably didn’t post exactly where she wanted to but I love her anyway.

Fun with search engines…or why the title of this site changed today

Hello, my name is Kelly Adams….and I’m a searchaholic.

I like to Google. Google is my friend. Well, most of the time its my friend. Until, that is, I search for myself on the vast frontier land that is the Internet. Go ahead, try it yourself: search for “Kelly Adams” (use the quotes). You won’t find my presence on the web on page one…or page two…or even page five. In those first few pages, you’ll discover an actress named Kelly Adams and some fan sites for her, a couple of authors of pornography with the name “Kelly Adams”, and some other sites I just don’t have the time to look at. But my site is somewhere in the Google results: keep looking…on page 12 or so. Now try uber geek “Kelly Adams”. There I am, page one. Or “Kelly’s World”: there my site is again, page one.

MTU, Linksys, and Linux Connection failures

I warn you in advance that the following post describes a situation that does not make technical sense to me. But its the truth, and so I figured “hey, this is a geek website, and maybe some of the people visiting here are geeks, so maybe they’ll appreciate the absurdity”.

Network config problems: Linksys RV016, One to One NAT, and apache

I have to apologize for the site problems today. I’ve been installing a new network firewall/hub, and encountering any number of irritating problems along the way.

Right at the moment I can’t get any of my virtual hosts to work. If you expected to go to the Dawn of Asgard or Solstice sites and are reading this instead, thats why. I hope to have things figured out shortly, but for the moment, things are sumewhat fubar’d.

New-old content up on site…D&D, EverQuest Essays

I finally got around to finishing what I started back in July and now all my old articles are available.

If you look to the right under “Other Content”, you’ll see the Essays and Articles link. Click that and you’ll be looking at a menu of my longer written stuff. Feel free to burrow through my miscellaneous mental meanderings…

Coming Soon: Google AdSense

Well, I’ve resisted for quite a while, but I’ve decided to add Google AdSense to my site.

What will this mean? If you are familiar with AdSense, what I’ll be doing is setting things up so that Google will place some relevant links on my page. “Relevant” is based on Google’s analysis of the words and context on my site- in my experience, its reasonably accurate.

My web server has a flower…

I finally got that new heat sink for my server this afternoon. I shut the box down for an hour or two while I installed and tested to make sure the CPU wasn’t getting overly hot.

The new heatsink is by a company called Zalman, and because of its unique shape they call the heat sink a “flower” style. Why did I go with such a funky looking heat sink? Well, mainly because of the positive user comments and the fact that the heat sink comes as a kit with everything, including thermal grease.
